Day 1 Results
LEXINGTON, Va. – After a two-week hiatus from competition, the VMI track and field teams resumed action with excellent times and distances in addition to a facility record and postseason qualifying marks Friday afternoon at the VMI Corps Physical Training Facility in Lexington.
Senior men's distance runner
Jahanzib Shahbaz earned a new facility record in the 1,000-meter race as he finished first in 2:25.54, beating the prior CPTF record of 2:26.99 held by George Mason's Blaine Lacey. The time is an IC4A qualifier and missed the VMI school record for the event by just .08 seconds.
Fellow senior
James Granderson also earned an IC4A qualifying time in the 60-meter hurdles as he finished with a third-place time of 8.29 seconds in the semifinals to advance to Saturday's finals. In the preliminaries he finished with a time of 8.50 seconds for fifth place.
Women's junior thrower
Sarah Leckman earned a distance of 14.53m (47'8") for first place in the weight throw. Sophomore
McKenna Dunn also came in first place in the pole vault with a height of 3.50 meters (11'5-3/4'')
Women's sprinter
Ariana Ruffin qualified for Saturday's 60-meter hurdles finals by placing third in the semifinals in 7.80 seconds. On the men's side, junior sprinter
Jordin Poindexter qualified for Saturday's finals by placing seventh in 6.95 seconds.
Women's track athlete
Julianne Knoblett came in second place in the women's 500-meter run in 1:18.49.
The relays teams finished off the day as the VMI men's foursome of
Dylan Haines,
Adam Waite,
Zach Lauster and
Trent Whittaker came in first with a time of 7:54.41, less than a second off from qualifying for the IC4A Championships. The VMI men's "B" team of David Fiorillo,
Andre Jordan, Ian Irizarry-Negron and
Quentin Bundy also competed well by placing second in 8:16.99.
Day two of the 2020 VMI Winter Relays begins Saturday with the multi-events at 8 a.m.
