Day 1 Results
LEXINGTON, Va. – Eager to start the 2020 season, the VMI track and field team earned several top performances to highlight the first day of the third annual Keydet Invitational Friday at the Corps Physical Training Facility.
On the men's side, sophomore sprinter
Jordin Poindexter came up big with an IC4A qualifying time of 6.945 in the 60-meter semifinals to place eighth overall, which advances him to the finals round Saturday. He earned a 7.03 earlier in the preliminaries to arrive first in his heat and 14th overall.
Senior thrower
Daniel Usher finished in 14th overall in the weight throw and third in his flight by earning a distance of 14.85 meters (48'8-3/4").
"I am excited about the energy this team competed with," said VMI head coach
Darrin Webb. "They had some really good performances, highlighted by Jordin (Poindexter) qualifying for the IC4A Championships in the 60 meter.
"They just got back from break and they are competing with excitement and energy. I am confident we will see more of it tomorrow."
The men's 4x800 relay team of
Dylan Haines,
Andre Jordan,
Adam Waite and Ian Irizarry-Negron placed second in the race with a time of 8:10.23. The VMI B foursome of
Dennison Kelly,
Zach Diller,
Ridge Clark and
Noah Schagelin arrived in fourth place in 8:41.03.
In the men's DMR, the foursome of
Walt Kitson,
Aaron Kempf,
Zach Lauster and
Justin Adams arrived in sixth place in 10:37.90 followed closely by a second VMI foursome of
Trent Whittaker,
Quentin Bundy, David Fiorillo and Johnathan Krone in 7th in 10:41.86.
After four events of the men's heptathlon, VMI's
Max Burke sits in third place with 2,378 points with three events to compete Saturday morning. He finished third in the high jump and fourth in the 60 meter, long jump and shot put.
In the women's 60-meter preliminaries, junior
Ariana Ruffin placed ninth overall in 7.83 seconds, which was first in her heat. In the semis she came in 14th overall with the same time of 7.83 seconds.
Women's sophomore sprinter
Ingrid Joseph arrived in 24th in the 60-meter preliminaries in 8.02 seconds (fourth in heat). She would go on to earn an 18th-place mark in the semifinals with a time of 7.88 seconds.
The Keydet Invitational resumes Saturday morning at 8 a.m. with the multi events while the rest will begin at 10 a.m.
