VMI Swim and Dive Team Performs Well at ODU

NORFOLK, Va. – The VMI swimming and diving team competed at Old Dominion University Saturday in a multi-team event, with freshman Stephen Hopta breaking a school record. The Keydet men defeated Howard 171-113, but lost to ODU 160-128. VMI's women's team fell to ODU (240-39), Howard (136-104) and Campbell (212-46).

Hopta took third in the 200-freestyle in 1:43.95 to break the program record, surpassing the old mark of 1:44.11 set by Christian Shaner in 2013. He won the 200-backstroke in 1:54.50 and was second in the 500-freestyle in 4:47.46.

The Keydet 400-free relay team of Hopta, Nick Palmieri, Brady Gannon and Ryan Schmitz won the race in 3:12.51.

Ryan Cooper won the 200-IM in 2:01.63 and John Reed won both diving competitions, the 1-meter (190.20) and 3-meter (177.80). Palmieri took second in the 100-butterfly (54.77) and third in the 100-free (48.72), while Andrew Mills was second in the 200-butterfly (2:00.87) and third in the 100-butterfly (55.02). Jake Johnson finished second in the 100-backstroke in 54.59 and Anno Kong was second in the 200-IM in 2:04.52.

Sophie Svoboda had a pair of fourth-place finishes on the women's side; recording times of 59.62 in the 100-butterfly and 213.29 in the 200-IM. She also placed fifth in the 100-backstroke in 1:00.60. The VMI 200-yard medley relay team of Svoboda, Morgan Davis, Calle Biles and Sarah MacDougall placed sixth in 1:56.51.

“As a whole, we had our best performance of the season today,” said head coach Andrew Bretscher. “We had numerous season bests, some lifetime bests and even a school record. With very difficult double practices all week, performing so well today is a great sign for the remainder of the season. We will keep working hard through the start of classes next week and into our meet at W&L.”

VMI is back in action Saturday at nearby Washington & Lee University in a tri-meet against the Generals and Randolph College.
