UMBC Defeats VMI Swimming

BALTIMORE, Md. – The VMI men's and women's swimming and diving teams faced a tough University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) program Saturday, with the host Retrievers winning the men's competition 157-121 and the women's 118-83.

Ryan Cooper took second place in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:15.67 and Stephen Hopta finished fourth in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:04.20) and the 100-yard butterfly (53.91). Jacob Smilie was second in the 100-yard backstroke in 54.39 and fourth in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:01.22. John Kruszewski was fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.07 while John Reed placed third in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions.

Zoe Salafatinos was fourth in 1:07.76 in the 100-yard backstroke, Sophie Svoboda was fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:36.86). Makenna Moore finished third in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:54.78.

The Keydets are off until after the New Year.
