FAIRFAX, Va. - On a day beset by cold, blustery conditions, Yaa Agyepong-Wiafe set a new school record in the 110-meter hurdles, three Keydets finished in the top eight of the men's shot put and Greg Henderson and Pete Reed placed in the top five of the men's 100-meters, leading the VMI track and field efforts at the George Mason Spring Invite Saturday in Fairfax, Va.
Agyepong-Wiafe had an exceptional day in the cold weather, as she broke her own school record in the 110 hurdles by some two-tenths of a second. The sophomore crossed the line in 14.36 seconds to finish third overall in the event. She also finished fifth in the 100-meter dash, timing in at 13.29 seconds after crossing the line in 12.59 seconds in prelims.
Other women's results included Brenea Thomas finishing eighth in the triple jump (10.82 M/35'6") and Kennedy Smith placing ninth (10.70 M/35'1 1/4"). On the men's side, Joel Hoisington led a trio of Keydets in the top eight of the shot put. Hoisington stretched the tape to 16.24 M/53'3 1/2" despite the adverse conditions, while Grant Sanchez was seventh (14.47 M/47'5 3/4") and William Condrey was eighth (14.25 M/46'9").
The 100-meters saw Henderson finish third, crossing the line in the finals in 11.11 seconds after an even better 10.98 prelim time, while Reed was fifth at 11.16. Reed also finished 10th in the long jump (6.05 meters /19'10 1/4").
Other running event results included Jay Broom surviving the cold and wind to finish 16th in the 1,500 (4:02.80), while the 4X4 relay - Deondre Anderson, Andrew Gould, Desmond Weinberg-Jones and Davon Guerrier - was third in its event (3:27.35). Other throwing events saw Jordan White finish sixth in the hammer (52.17 M/171'2"), while Grant Sanchez finished fifth in the discus (44.63 M/146'5") and Killian Carey was eighth (42.50 M/139'5"). Carey's effort was a near-three meter PR for the sophomore.

Finally, Guerrier was seventh in the 110-hurdles (15.25), Anderson was ninth in the 400 (51.11) and Myles Brown finished an impressive third in the triple jump (12.73 M/41'9 1/4").
"There were many tough weather conditions today," said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. "Some of our athletes came prepared, and others needed to be a little more ready. Yaa Agyepong-Wiafe led a cast of several who were exceptional today, but a day like this is more about beating the competition than about times and marks. We will be better for having competed today! Now, we will get a few people healthy, analyze the weekend and move forward to prepare for the championship part of our season coming up in the next few weeks."
VMI track and field will return to action April 15, when the Keydets open competition at the two-day Charlotte Invitational in Charlotte, N.C.
