BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Victories by Jordan White in the weight throw and Greg Henderson in the 200-meters helped propel the VMI men's track and field team to a third-place finish in the 2016 SoCon Indoor Championships, which concluded Saturday in Birmingham, Ala.
White prevailed in the weight throw with a toss of 19.21 meters (63'0 1/4") that was just .02 meters shy of the meet record. It was the second-best throw in VMI history and gave him an impressive 18 points for the meet, following his runner-up finish in the shot Friday. Henderson, meanwhile, ran a 21.91 to win the 200-meters and qualify for the IC4A Championships. The time was just shy of the top-10 times in school history, and it led three Keydets in the top five, as outdoor champion Aron Long was second (22.01) and Pete Reed finished fifth (22.38).
As a team, the Keydets scored 126 points and finished behind champion Western Carolina (183) and runner-up Samford (129). ETSU was fourth with 101 markers, as the top three teams separated themselves from the pack. Furman (57), The Citadel (35), Wofford (28) and UNCG rounded out the men's team standings.
In addition to his effort in the 200, Henderson also finished fourth in the 60-meters, timing in at 6.93 seconds. Quan Myers was seventh in 7.13, just ahead of eighth-place Pete Reed. Myers earned all-freshman honors for his effort.
Avery Martin also had a strong day Saturday, posting a pair of runner-up finishes. Martin was second in both the 800 (1:51.57, an indoor personal best) and the mile (4:10.80). In the longer distance, he was joined by teammate Jay Broom, who earned all-freshman laurels with a sixth-place finish and a 4:17.40 time.
The 60-meter hurdles were, as anticipated, important to the Keydet efforts. Davon Guerrier earned runner-up honors with a personal best time of 8.20 seconds, while Lee Warren was third in 8.29.
The Keydets also scored twice in two other events, including the 400-meters, where Andrew Gould delivered a personal best 49.58 to finish fourth. Teammate Deondre Anderson was eighth and earned all-freshmen honors.
Desmond Weinberg-Jones, meanwhile, was fifth in the heptathlon with 4,395 points, while all-freshman honoree Levi Whitt finished seventh (4354).
Finally, Grant Holmes finished eighth in the pole vault (4.60 M/15'1"), while Sean Helmke was eighth in the 5K (15:11.66) and the 4X400-meter relay, comprised of Anderson, Tyriuq Trotman, Martin and Gould finished fourth in 3:23.02.
"I thought we competed well all weekend," said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. "Jordan White, Greg Henderson and Avery Martin all performed especially well today, and we had several freshmen who were able to gain valuable experience and score points at the same time. Those who have qualified will now get ready for the IC4A/ECAC meet, while others will prepare for the opening of outdoor season in a few weeks."
VMI track and field will return to action March 4, when qualified Keydets open competition at the IC4A Championships in Boston, Mass.
