NEWARK, N.J. - The VMI Keydets saw John Kelly post runner-up finishes in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events, helping the men's swimming and diving team split a tri-meet at NJIT Saturday afternoon in Newark, N.J. The Keydets (1-3) fell to the host Highlanders 173-86, but knocked off Saint Peter's 157-90. NJIT swept its portion of the meet with a 163-90 win over SPU.
VMI's efforts on the day saw the team finish second in five events, with Kelly being involved in four of those. The 400 medley relay squad, anchored by Kelly, finished second in 3:49.15 and also included Joe Lincoln, Mitch Fornwald and Christian Shaner.
Later in the meet, Kelly also anchored the 200 free relay team of himself, Brady Gannon, Christian Purdy and Christian Rowcliffe to a runner-up finish in 1:30.32. Individually, Kelly was second in the 50 free (22.45) and also in the 100 (48.99).
VMI's other runner-up finish came in the 100 IM, where Steven Seay touched the wall in 59.51.
VMI swimming and diving returns to action Nov. 14, when the Keydets take on Howard and Loyola in a tri-meet in Baltimore, Md. Action is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
