LYNCHBURG, Va. - Avery Martin won the 1,500-meters, edging the defending IC4A champion to take the title and lead VMI track and field on the final day of the Liberty Collegiate Invitational, contested Saturday in Lynchburg, Va.
Martin's victory came in 3:54.01, just four-hundredths ahead of Isaac Wendland, former Liberty standout now running professionally. Martin led three Keydets in the top eight, as freshman Zach Phillips (4:05.44) and Zach Chase (4:05.98) were seventh and eighth, respectively.
In the 5,000-meters, Patrick Spahn led three VMI runners who finished second, third and fourth. Spahn was second in 15:32.86, with Hartnel Paultre third (15:35.46) and Brandon White (15:40.90) finishing fourth.
Meanwhile, Greg Henderson was second in the 200-meters, timing in at 22.00 seconds. Henderson was also fourth in the 100-meters at 11.00, with Aron Long fifth (11.03) and Pete Reed eighth (11.17).
VMI had two other podium finishes on the day, with freshman Max Midkiff finishing third in the 800-meters (1:55.43) and the 4X400-meter relay also finishing third, as Julian Jackson, Brandon Hartman, Henderson and Yol Ho Sung timed in at 3:23.59.
Finally, Sung was fifth in the 400-meters (50.34), one spot ahead of Brandon Hartman (50.36) and Skyler Toney was fourth in the pole vault (4.35 M/14'3 1/4").
VMI track and field is back in action April 12, taking part in the Mason Spring Invitational in Fairfax, Va.
