Murphy Wins Decathlon on Day Two of BSC Champs

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Quincy Murphy won the decathlon, pacing the VMI Keydet men's track and field team on day two at the Big South Outdoor Championships, hosted by Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C.

Murphy prevailed with a personal best total of 6,543 points over the two-day event and won by 132 markers. The performance would rank him eighth in the IC4A standings coming into the weekend and put him in prime position to qualify for his second IC4A decathlon. On Friday, the final day of action saw Murphy post the top time in the 110-meter hurdles, perhaps his best event of the 10, and then place second in the discus as well as equal his personal best in the pole vault (3.90 meters/12'9 ½”).

The other Keydet to score points was Joel Hoisington in the shot put, who hurled the implement 15.40 meters (50'6 1/4") for a third-place finish. The effort was a personal best mark.

VMI currently sits sixth in the team standings through two days of action, having notched 16 points. Liberty leads with 103 markers and High Point is second with 42. Coastal Carolina (33), Gardner-Webb (31) and Charleston Southern (25) rank third through fifth, with Campbell sitting seventh (13), UNC Asheville eighth (5) and Radford (3) and Winthrop (2) bringing up the rear.

Several running event preliminaries also took place Friday, including the 800 and 1,500-meter runs. Avery Martin qualified for Saturday's finals in both events, notching the top qualifying effort for the 1,500 with a 3:58.94 time. The sophomore was fifth in 800 qualifying at 1:55.28.

In addition, Murphy moved to Saturday's open 110-meter hurdles finals after finishing fifth in prelims (14.90), and Aron Long punched his ticket to the 100-meter finals by finishing eighth in 10.89 seconds.

VMI track and field returns to action Saturday for its final championship day in the Big South Conference. Action at Winthrop gets underway at 12:30 p.m.
