CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Four games in two days, including a win, several close calls and an epic double overtime match, saw the Virginia Military Institute women's water polo team conclude their first event of the team's Spring Furlough trip to California.

The Keydets went 1-3 during the Claremont Convergence, including a win in their first game, topping La Verne on Friday 15-10 for the team's first win over the Leopards in program history. VMI (5-7) fell in its next game 15-8 against Cal Lutheran on Friday. In Saturday's first game, Redlands held on for a 9-5 win over VMI, a much closer game than the Redlands' 13-6 win last season. Saturday's finale was one for the ages, the longest game in program history. Occidental and VMI played through two overtimes before the Tigers won 14-13.

In the opener of the Convergence, the Keydets squared off at La Verne's Las Flores Pool. Three players posted hat tricks as Celine Lazzaro, Caitlyn Jackson and Sierra Payne finished with three goals each. Molly Andoe and Mackenzie Perkins scored twice each while Elise Reed and Bailey Huddleston potted one goal apiece.

Between the pipes for VMI, Emily Cait Farsakian made six saves, with two each in the second, third and fourth quarters.

The Keydets took on Cal Lutheran at Claremont McKenna's Axelrood Pool. Huddleston led the way for VMI with a four-goal outburst, scoring once in each quarter. Celine Lazzaro accounted for VMI's pair of goals. Farsakian made two saves in the contest.

VMI's third game of the Convergence pitted the Keydets against the Bulldogs of Redlands at Axelrood Pool. The closest game in series history saw Jackson score twice, once in the first and once in the third. Perkins potted one goal in the second while Cecilya Lundy deposited a shot in the third. Farsakian finished with five saves in the contest.

Lazzaro was a huge part of VMI's double overtime game against Occidental, scoring six times, including two in the third quarter, a stretch of eight minutes the Keydets out-scored the Tigers 4-0. Payne finished with three goals as Andoe struck twice. Perkins and Lundy each finished with two goals. Farsakian made seven saves in her 38 minutes of work in the program's longest game.

After a 3-3 tie to end the first quarter, the Keydets took a 6-5 lead into halftime, thanks to three goals from three different players, Payne, Andoe and Lazzaro. The third quarter saw VMI take a 10-5 lead with two Lazzaro goals and one each from Payne and Lundy.

But the fourth quarter belonged to the Tigers, who out-scored VMI 6-1. The lone Keydet tally came from the hand of Lazzaro, forcing an 11-11 tie at the end of regulation. Occidental went up 12-11 midway through the first overtime period, but Lazzaro knotted the score at 12-12 with just 22 seconds left.

Again the Tigers went up 13-12 in the second overtime period before Lazzaro tied the game at 13-13 with 1:23 left on the clock. But Occidental got the game-winning goal with just three seconds left in the period.
