RICHMOND, Va. - Renee Reives won the shot put and finished second in the discus throw, leading the VMI Keydet women's track and field team at its outdoor season opener, the VCU Ram Invite contested Saturday in Richmond.
Reives prevailed in the shot put with an ECAC qualifying mark of 14.26 meters (46'9 1/2"), and went on to finish second in the discus throw with a best effort of 38.82 meters (127'4").
Other top finishers for the Keydet women included Rachel Sing, who finished second in the javelin (34.98 M/114'9"). Logan Edwards in the hammer throw (43.31 M/142'1"), Hannah Dickinson in the 1,500-meters (4:57.62), and Thireyona Legg in the long jump (5.29 M/17'4 1/4") also added top-five results.
In addition, Elizabeth Johnson was seventh in the shot put (11.24 M/36'10 1/2").
"For our first outdoor meet, this was a solid effort," said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. "We trained hard leading up to the meet, so I thought we might be flat, but we had some qualifiers to the IC4A/ECAC Championships and some top finishes. I am very pleased with how we competed and look for continued improvement in the weeks leading up to conference."
All told, the VMI women finished eighth of 12 scored teams competing, accumulating 45 points.
VMI track and field will return to action next weekend, when the Keydets send athletes to both the Raleigh Relays, hosted by N.C. State in Raleigh, N.C., and Richmond's Fred Hardy Invite.
