RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- The Virginia Military Institute women's water polo team concluded its third-annual West Coast swing on Saturday, but fell in both games. In the first game of the day, the Keydets dropped a 14-4 decision to Cal Baptist University, which was hosting the Lancer Invite #2. In the California finale, VMI fell 20-17 in an epic double-overtime match against Chapman.
One of the top teams in the country, Cal Baptist held VMI to four goals and just one multiple goal scorer, freshman Bailey Huddleston, who had two markers. Junior Mackenzie Perkins and sophomore Caitlyn Jackson had one goal apiece while sophomore keeper Emily Cait Farsakian made four stops against the Lancers.
In game two, the Keydets player their second double overtime game of the Spring Furlough trip, but fell 20-17. Perkins led the Keydets with four tallies while Jackson, Huddleston and Celine lazzaro potted three each. Sierra Payne potted a pair of goals as Cecilya Lundy and Molly Andoe notched one apiece. Farsakian made 11 saves against Chapman.
Chapman held the lead throughout most of the game, but the Keydets stayed in contact and never allowed Chapman to gain more than a four-goal advantage. VMI (9-11) grabbed a 16-15 lead with 2:49 left in regulation, but Chapman answered to tie the game at 16-16,
VMI again grabbed a one-goal lead with just 47 seconds left in the match as Lazzaro found the back of the net. But again, Chapman tied the game with 23 seconds left in the match.
Neither team managed a goal in the first overtime, but Chapman ripped off three goals in the second overtime to take the 20-17 win.
The non-conference schedule is now behind the Keydets as VMI begins Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action on Saturday. VMI opens league play against St. Francis Brooklyn and Siena at noon and 4 p.m., respectively. Both of Saturday's games will be played at Iona College.
