SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Playing its fifth game of an 11-game California trip, the Virginia Military Institute women's water polo team topped host Cal State San Bernardino 15-9 Tuesday evening, the team's second win in California during the Institute's Spring Furlough.
The win was a total team effort as seven different Keydets registered goals. More impressive is the way VMI (6-7) was called for just one exclusion in the 32 minutes of action.
Leading the charge for VMI on offense were three players logging hat tricks. Juniors Celine Lazzaro and Mackenzie Perkins, along with freshman Sierra Payne, finished with three goal apiece. Senior Molly Andoe and rookie Bailey Huddleston registered two goals while sophomore Caitlyn Jackson and Cecilya Lundy potted one goal each.
Between the pipes, sophomore Emily Cait Farsakian made seven stops for VMI. Her nine goals allowed tie the fewest goals the team has allowed on the West Coast this season, drawing even with a 9-4 loss against Redlands on Saturday.
The Keydets are right back in the pool on Wednesday as VMI is slated for a two-venue doubleheader. VMI opens Wednesday's pair with a 3 p.m. PST start at Whittier's Slade Aquatics Center. Following that game, VMI transfers to Caltech for a 6 p.m. start.
