Water Polo Concludes Season-Opening Weekend at Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The third season of women's water polo at the Virginia Military Institute is underway. The Keydets opened the 2014 slate at the Princeton Tournament, hosted by the Ivy League school on Saturday and Sunday.

VMI opened the year with Harvard University, falling 16-6 to the first of two Ivy League teams it would see over the weekend. In Saturday's second game, the Keydets dropped a 14-7 decision against George Washington University. The weekend rounded out on Sunday, with VMI taking on Princeton, but the Tigers took the win 17-4.

After sitting out 2013, senior Molly Andoe wasted no time getting back to her scoring rhythm, potting a goal in each quarter against Harvard. Mackenzie Perkins tallied one goal in the first quarter while rookie Sierra Payne scored the first goal her career in the third. Sophomore keeper Emily Cait Farsakian made nine saves against Harvard, including three in the second quarter.

Freshman Bailey Huddleston posted three assists against Harvard, while sophomore Caitlyn Jackson added one helper. Perkins drew five exclusions, while Andoe drew another pair. Huddleston, Jackson, Sierra Sell and Celine Lazzaro each drew one exclusion.

In the second game on Saturday, Andoe struck twice for her second multiple goal game of the weekend. Freshman Bailey Huddleston scored her first two goals as a Keydet, doing so in the fourth quarter. Payne added on goal for VMI, as did Lazzaro. Farsakian added another four saves against George Washington.

Andoe and Lazzaro chipped in two assists each against the Colonials, while Jackson added a fifth. Perkins drew four exclusions against George Washington, while Andoe drew a trio. Jackson and Lazzaro drew two each.

Elise Reed tallied VMI's lone goal in the first half against Princeton, but three of her teammates, Andoe, Huddleston and Heather Magill, scored once each in the third period. Perkins, Reed and Huddleston, each added an assist to the day. Lazzaro, Huddleson and Reed all drew exclusions against the Tigers.

The Keydets to Lexington on Feb. 28 to open the 2014 VMI Classic, taking on Notre Dame College (Ohio) at 5 p.m. The full weekend of events will be hosted at Clark King Pool.
