LEXINGTON, Va. -- After a layoff of nearly a month, the Virginia Military Institute mixed and women's rifle teams returned to action Saturday morning, topping Canisius College at the Kilbourne Hall Rifle Range. The Mixed team had the top score with a 4,314 while the women's side shot a 3,616. The visiting Golden Griffins posted a 3,510.
Jeremy Bolden was on point for the Keydets' mixed team during the air rifle portion of the morning, shooting a 577 out of a possible 600. Loran Dreelin was second with a 559 while William Nunn fired a 550. Andrew Hickey rounded out the scoring with a 544.
In mixed smallbore, Zach Johnson was the top shooter with a 552 while Andrew Hickey put through a 544. Mark Persinger scored for the first time this season with a 532 while Dreelin shot a 530 across the discipline's three positions.
On the women's side, Emily Hill was the top cadet-athlete with a 550 in air rifle, while Katherine Watson notched a 538. Vania Murica and Loyce Lightfoot shot a 538 and a 527, respectively. Hill was the top shooter in smallbore as well, firing a 518, edging Murcia's 515. Watson finished with a 492 while Lightfoot capped her day with a 482.
Canisius combined for a 1,732 in air rifle, paced by Matthew Keysa's 504. James Hayes and Jeffrey Donovan fired a 496 and a 468, respectively, while Megan Teed rounded out the air rifle scoring with a 410. In small bore, Keysa was again the Griffins' top shooter with a 514 while Donovan fired a 488. James Hayes posted a 462 as Teed again rounded out the scoring with a 452.
The Keydets are off until late January when VMI heads to Charleston, S.C. for a rematch with The Citadel. Action is set for Jan. 24 at the Bulldogs' Inouye Marksmanship Center.
