LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI men's and women's track and field/cross country programs have announced their 2013-14 recruiting classes, a list of 16 student-athletes that will begin competition this coming fall.
The men's class is headlined by four athletes, including thrower Grant Sanchez. Sanchez ranked 38th nationally in the indoor shot put this past season, and is a former Junior Olympic champion in the event as well. Sprinter Greg Henderson, who finished second in the 100-meter dash at this past season's state meet, and state champion pole vaulters Grant Holmes (AA) and Zachary Campbell (AAA) also help lead this class into its first collegiate season.
“We have gained depth in our men's program with this class,” said VMI Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Darrin Webb. “Our pole vault group, in particular, should be much improved, but we have added quality athletes across all disciplines, including middle distance, throws, hurdles and sprints.”
The women's recruiting class is comprised of four athletes, and includes Hayley Freeman out of Maryland, who was second in the 300-meter hurdles at the Maryland State Championships. Rachel Bryd of Powhatan, Va. is also in the class, after finishing in the top-11 in both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs at the AA state meet this past season.
“While our women's class is small, we like the quality of these four athletes, and we believe they all will help raise the standard of our program,” said Webb.
