Helmke's Third-Place Finish Leads VMI XC to Win at JMU

NEW MARKET, Va. – In his first career 8K, freshman Sean Helmke finished third to lead VMI men's cross country to a team win at the JMU Invitational, contested Saturday morning at the New Market Battlefield in New Market, Va.

Helmke clocked in at 25:56.70 in his first 8K, and the first full-length race of his college career. He led a VMI sweep of the #3-#8 placings in the final order, as the Keydets scored just 20 points to take the win. Howard finished second with 46 markers, while Longwood's 75 points and Southern Virginia's 108 rounded out the team standings.

Behind Helmke, it was Cabell Willis finishing fourth in 26:10, while Andrey Dmitriev continued to rebound from off-season injuries and finished fifth. Dmitriev crossed the stripe in 26:13.60, while Hartnel Paultre was sixth in 26:14 and Will Thompson finished seventh in 26:18.10. Jason Thorpe rounded out the Keydet top-10 finishers, placing eighth with a time of 26:26.10.

“We had a very good group of runners that worked well together, and we expect to have a solid top six,” said VMI Assistant Track and Field/Cross Country Coach Jen Fazioli. “I was very pleased with Sean Helmke's effort today in his first career 8K, as he never struggled or looked like he was in trouble. He has obviously been very diligent with his training. Jason Thorpe also finished particularly strong, and Andrey Dmitriev is clearing starting to take steps forward once again, as he comes back from injury.”

The Keydet finishers continued with Steven Trayer, who placed 13th in 26:56.30, as well as Booth Hornsby, who clocked in at 27:15.10 to place 17th overall. Gabe Fisher (27:16.60/18th), Patrick Spahn (27:27.80/21st), Daniel DeNijs (27:53.80/23rd) and Guy Shelby (28:03.30/24th) rounded out VMI's runners in action Saturday.

VMI cross country will return to action Friday, Sept. 28 as the Keydets take part in the Paul Short Run in Lehigh, Pa.
