VMI's Felix Kitur and Jennifer Sing have qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round, according to information released Thursday. The meet will serve as the opening of this year's NCAA Championships, and will be contested May 24-26 at North Florida's Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
Kitur makes another appearance at this meet, the descendant of the meet where he ran a VMI and Big South record 1:46.75 as a freshman in 2008. Kitur is seeded seventh in the 800-meters as he seeks his fourth appearance in the main bracket of the NCAA Championships. His first race is set for Thursday, May 24 at 8:10 p.m.
Sing, meanwhile, will make her first appearance in the opening round of the NCAA Championship as she takes part in the pole vault. The senior cleared 4.05 meters at this year's first outdoor meet, the VMI W&L Carnival, to post the second-highest jump in Big South history. She will be seeded 18th in the event that goes off 11 a.m. May 25.
The top 12 finishers from each event contested in Jacksonville will advance to Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa, where they will join 12 athletes from the West Preliminary Round meet to form the main NCAA Championship grouping June 6-9.
