LEXINGTON, Va. – It was a
tough way to end the season for the VMI wrestling team, which fell to the
University of Tennessee at Chattanooga 41-0 on Monday night in the team's final
dual match of the 2011-12 season.
Prior to the Southern
Conference match, head coach John Trudgeon and his coaching staff honored the
team's four seniors, Matthew Brock, Luke Todd, David Yost and Bryce Garrison,
in their final match as Keydets in The Thunderdome.
The closest match of the
evening for VMI involved a senior 174 pounder Brock, who fell 5-2 to Levi
Clemons. The match was close throughout, tied 2-2 going into the final moments.
With control of the riding time, Clemons threw a double leg takedown, scoring
two points and tacking on his 1:16 of riding time for the 5-2 victory.
At 157 pounds, sophomore
Ted Gottwald fell by a narrow 4-0 decision. VMI was hurt by 12 points given up
by forfeits at 125 and 184 pounds.
In addition to the 12
forfeit points, VMI (5-11, 2-4 SoCon) fell victim to three major decisions,
accounting for another 12 points during the match.
Chattanooga, which
earlier this season defeated then 12th-ranked Stanford, improved to
4-1 in the Southern Conference, which will host its championships in
Chattanooga on March 3. That will be the next live action the Keydets see.
