YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Senior Jenna Moye and freshman Kelsey Newcomb won their season debuts Saturday, leading the VMI women's track and field team at its season opener, the YSU Icebreaker hosted by Youngstown State in Youngstown, Ohio.

Moye prevailed in the 3,000-meter run, clocking in at 10:03.65 to win by nearly 23 seconds. The victory came in her first indoor 3K since the 2011 Big South Indoor Championships, and on this day, she came up just a second shy of her school record (10:02.66) set that same season.

Newcomb, meanwhile, won her collegiate track debut with a 2:20.81 effort in the 800-meters. She was three seconds faster than the second-place finisher.

The VMI throwers also had a strong day, with Mary Grace Lemon and Renee Reives each posting a podium finish. Reives did so in the shot, finishing third with a personal best toss of 13.32 meters (43'8 ½”), while Lemon was third in the weight throw, posting a 14.50 M/47'7” mark.

Freshman Logan Edwards was eighth in the weight, thanks to hurling the implement 12.84 M/42'1 ½”.

In other action on track, freshman Amanda Okani was 8th in the 60-meter hurdles (9.39), while Michelle Church finished fourth in the mile (5:25.67).

“Today was a very strong, exciting day for our teams,” said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. “Our staff and our athletes have set the stage for what I expect to be a very good indoor season, and today was a great start. Between the two programs, we had five first-place finishes, two IC4A qualifiers and nearly an ECAC qualifier, thanks to a big PR by Renee Reives in the shot put. Both the freshmen, including Kelsey Newcomb, and the upper classmen, including Reives, Mary Grace Lemon and Jenna Moye, showed well today, and I'm very pleased with our results as a whole.”

VMI track and field will return to action Jan. 19, taking part in the Wake Forest Invitational at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. The track is the same facility that will host this year's Big South Indoor Championships Feb. 21 and 22.
