CHARLESTON,
S.C. – Senior 174-pounder Matthew Brock
extended his consecutive victories streak to nine in a row, knocking off the
nation's No. 18-ranked wrestler, Turtugokh Luvsandorj, but the Keydet win was
one of just two on the afternoon as VMI fell to The Citadel 36-6 on Sunday.
Joining Brock in the win column was freshman Carry Joseph,
who notched his third straight win. But despite the point differential, four of
the day's matches were decided by two points or less.
Things got off to a slow start for the Keydets (4-7, 2-2
SoCon), who dropped their first two matches, one by fall in the first bout of
the day at 149 pounds. But Michael Burnett battled for VMI at 157 pounds and
was narrowly edged out 3-2 by Pierre Frazile.
But Joseph got the Keydets on the board with a decisive 9-4
decision at 165 pounds, cutting into the Bulldogs' lead, 9-3.
Brock, who improves to a team-leading 24-8, was in a close
match throughout his 174-pound bout. The first period went by with neither
grappler getting a point, but eventually Brock chose bottom in the third and
managed to earn an escape point.
After being hit with a stall call, Luvsandorj was awarded a
point and the 174-pound match was tied 1-1 when the third period ended. Brock
had his handed raised after hitting a takedown in the waning moments of the
first overtime period.
But that would be the end of the Keydets' team scoring as The
Citadel (5-7, 1-1 SoCon) won the final six matches of the afternoon.
Following Brock's match, John Dommert was edged out 11-10 at
184 pounds, the highest scoring bout of the day. At 197 pounds, rookie Urayoan
Garcia was also in a tight match, but he too was bested by a one-point margin,
4-3.
The Bulldogs' point total was aided by three pins at 149, 285
and 133 pounds. The Citadel also received six team points as VMI forfeited 125
pounds.
VMI hits the road for a Thursday night match in Pennsylvania
as the Keydets take on host Millersville University. Match time is set for 7
p.m. at the Marauders' Pucillo
Gymnasium.
