Final Brackets

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Less than 24 hours after helping VMI wrestling claim its first dual match victory of the season, heavyweight Andrew Embree took fourth place at the Davidson Open on Saturday, logging five victories along the way.

Embree, whose 8-3 decision Friday night lifted the Keydets to an 18-17 victory over Franklin & Marshall, opened his Saturday with a 9-3 decision over Saint Andrew's Denzel Vaughan. The sophomore Keydet posted his first victory by major decision in the second round with a 10-2 win over Liberty's Brandon Lawrence.

In the quarterfinals of the championship bracket, Embree was edged 4-1 by eventual champion Andrew Delaney, who wrestled unattached from The Citadel. Embree fell to the wrestleback bracket, where he got back on track with a 5-1 victory over John Gibson of Newberry, who wrestled unattached. In the consolation semifinals, Embree notched his fourth win of the day, pinning Juan Adams, who was wrestling unattached for VMI, in just 38 seconds.

Embree reached the consolation finals after winning by forfeit after Bradley Rogers was disqualified. In the finals, Embree was narrowly edged by Tennessee Chattanooga's Kevin Malone 3-2.

Ted Gottwald reached the semifinals of the 157 pound class, kicking off his Open with a 7-4 victory over Duke's Daniel Adamo. Gottwald posted his first win by fall in the second round, pinning Appalachian State's unattached wrestler, Jacob Freeman, in the waning moments of the first period, 2:54.

Gottwald earned a berth in the semifinals after claiming a 5-3 victory over Willard Beaver of Tennessee Chattanooga in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Gottwald was ousted 5-2 by eventual champion, Chad Strube of Virginia Tech. Gottwald fell 9-2 in the consolation semifinals against Appalachian State's John Blakely.

In the 165-pound division, Hardy Hendren logged his first win of the season and doing so in style, pulling a 14-2 major decision over Liberty's Pete Ward. Hendren fell to the consolations after an 11-1 major decision against Davidson's Tyler Mullen.

Hendren met teammate Van Grimes in the second round of the consolations. Grimes won the teammate match up 9-2.Grimes posted his second win of the afternoon with a narrow 2-1 victory against Newberry's Tyler Johnson. The Keydet has his afternoon cut short in the consolation fourth round after falling 8-5 against Saint Andrew's Steffan Baker.

Zeb Stewart represented the Keydets at 141 pounds. The freshman was pinned in the third round against Kenneth Kamnich of Limestone College, but bounced back in the consolations with 16-1 technical fall against Cumberlands' Roy Winder. Stewart saw his afternoon end in the first period of the wrestleback third rounds against Appalachian State's Thomas Puckett.

The Keydets are back in action this Friday night when the Fighting Camels of Campbell University visit The Thunderdome. Action is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
