Keydets Go to 5-0, Disbro Breaks 19-Year Old VMI Record

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI men's swimming and diving team went to 5-0 with a 182-107 win over the Howard Bison, and Dallas Disbro capped the meet off in style, breaking a 19-year old school record in 1-meter diving in action Saturday at Clark King Pool in Lexington.

In the day's penultimate event, the 1-meter dive, Disbro posted a score of 290.20 to win and easily break the former school record of 273.05, set by Mark Roltsch in 1982. It makes Disbro the first Keydet, other than James Goodwillie, to set a new varsity record since the 2010 CCSA Championships, and it puts the senior under 10 points away from the NCAA qualifying standard, which stands at an even 300 points.

Disbro then went on to post a winning 274.70 score in the 3-meter diving to close out the meet, as he was one of two Keydets to post multiple individual victories on the day. Freshman John Kelly also did so, winning both the 50 free (21.99) and the 100 free (48.24). Kelly led VMI sweeps of both events, as Connor McMahon and Stephen Lloyd went 2-3 in the 100, with McMahon and Chris Dreikorn doing the same in the 50.

"It is always about the conference championship meet, but now there are two dual meets that stand out over my 13 seasons as a head coach,” said VMI head coach Bill Nicholson. “Plattsburgh State vs. Norwich (Jan. 2000) and today's meet against Howard and N.C. A&T. I knew we would be good this weekend, but to travel to Maryland for a Friday night meet, then travel home and do a 3 p.m. meet the following day...I'm stunned by the performance the teams put together within a 24-hour period."

The Keydets also swept the backstroke events, with Matt Dale winning the 100 back in 55.31, just ahead of Goodwillie's 56.34, who then came back later in the meet to take the 200-yard version of the discipline in 1:59.85. Dale went on to be second in the 500 free (5:02.78).

Freshman Jake Shafer won the 200 fly (2:02.81), and has now begun his career with wins at four straight meets (five total duals). He was also second in the 100 fly, while classmate Stephen Lloyd took the 200 free with relative ease (1:47.56). In addition, senior David Hayes won a dramatic 200 breast in 2:20.81, outtouching his closest competitor by just over two-tenths of a second.

Finally, Dale led freshmen Lloyd, Shafer and Kelly to a win in the 200 medley relay, as the group clocked in at 1:40.30 for the victory.

VMI swimming and diving will return to action Friday, Nov. 4, traveling to Boiling Springs, N.C. to take on the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs. Start time is set for 6 p.m.
