EMMITSBURG, Md. – The VMI men's swimming and diving team defeated NJIT and Manhattan Friday evening, winning both ends of the tri-meet hosted by Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md. VMI defeated NJIT 172-20 and knocked off Manhattan 135-70, and with the wins, moved to 4-0 to start the 2011-12 campaign.
Freshman Jake Shafer was one of the standouts for the Keydets, winning both the 200-meter freestyle (2:01.52) and the 400 free (4:21.27) to lead Keydet dominations of those events. In the 200, Kodiak Bowers was just behind Shafer in 2:01.61, while Shafer just outtouched Bowers in the 400 as well, as the latter came home in 4:21.39 in that event. Nick Mathis was third in the 400, as VMI swept the podium finishes.
The other Keydet to take two races was James Goodwillie, who won the 100 back and 400 IM. The senior had to outtouch teammate Matt Dale in the back, but won the 400 IM going away for his second victory of the day.
Both Dale and Goodwillie returned later in the day, with Goodwillie leading the 400 medley relay to a win, while Dale was third in the 1,500 free. Goodwillie, Stephen Lloyd, Matt Elliott and Shafer combined for a 4:07.91 time in the relay, while Dale was third behind victorious teammate Jeff Whiteman, who won in 17:36.38.
For the second straight week, Lloyd prevailed in the 100 breast, clocking in at 1:10.45. The Keydets also had success in the sprint races, with Chris Dreikorn and John Kelly running 2-3 in the 50 free (24.87/25.03) and Kelly and Connor McMahon going 2-3 in the 100 free (54.98/55.63).
Finally, the 200 free relay team of Dreikorn, Elliott, McMahon and Kelly was second with a time of 1:42.67, and Thomas Brown won the 100 fly (1:02.52) over teammate Jack Sullivan (1:03.56).
VMI swimming and diving is back in action Saturday, playing host to Howard at Clark King Pool. The meet is set for a 3 p.m. start.
