Devine Named Big South Co-Pitcher of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Sophomore Michael Devine earned his sixth and seventh save of the season last week, allowing just one hit in two appearances to earn The Crons Brand Co-Pitcher of the Week honors from the Big South Conference, as announced Monday by the league office.

Devine (Cheswick, Pa./Springdale) began his week by working a scoreless ninth in VMI's 3-2 win over JMU Wednesday.  In his one inning, Devine struck out two of the three batters that he retired, allowing a single hit. Two nights later, Devine recorded his third two-out save in a week, allowing just one base runner while striking out a pair in VMI's 7-5 win over Gardner-Webb.

The right-hander has now earned a save in each of his last four appearances, allowing just two hits and striking out nine in seven innings during the run. On the year, Devine is 3-1 with seven saves, holding opponents to a .194 batting average, striking out 21 in 19.1 innings.  His seven saves are tied for the second-most in a single-season in VMI history.

Devine leads a VMI bullpen that has gone 11-2 with 10 saves, holding opponents to a .253 batting average while striking out 121 in 122 innings.  The Keydets are currently on an eight-game winning streak, their third separate streak of at least eight games this season, and are ranked 26th in the country by Collegiate Baseball, marking the highest ranking in program history.

Devine shared the honor with UNC Asheville's Ryan Dull, who threw a complete game, six-hitter against Presbyterian College last weekend.  The honor marks the first time Devine has been recognized as a Big South Pitcher of the Week.

VMI returns to action Wednesday evening as No. 1 Virginia comes to Gray-Minor Stadium for a 6 p.m. contest.  The game will mark the first time that two nationally-ranked baseball teams will meet on Post.  Fans attending the game are strongly encouraged to purchase their tickets in advance and to park either behind Marshall Hall or in the nose-in parking spots on Parade Ave.  Fans not in attendance can listen to the game via the VMI Sports Network, either online at www.VMIKeydets.com or on Lexington's Fox Sports Radio 1450 AM, or watch the game on the Big South Network, available at www.BigSouthSports.com.
