RALEIGH, N.C.- Senior Ronnie Ellsworth went a perfect 3-0 to take home the individual title at 197 lbs. at the 2010 NC State Wolfpack Open at Reynolds Coliseum Sun., Nov. 14. Redshirt-senior Michael Long placed third on the day with a 6-1 mark, and junior David Yost went 5-2 to take fourth as 10 Keydets were in action in the open tournament.
After a bye in the opening round of the bracket, Ellsworth made quick work of NC State's Austin Haigler, registering a pinfall at the 1:37 mark of the first period. In the semifinals, the senior knocked off another member of the Wolfpack, this time KaRonne Jones via a 4-3 decision. In the finals, he defeated Shane Nolan of UNC Pembroke 3-2 to earn the first-career tournament title of his Keydet career.
Yost and Long each shined in the lower weights for the Keydets on the day, with Long beginning his day by earning decision over Chris Mears of Virginia Tech (3-1) and Miquel Rodriguez of Liberty (8-1). However, he would drop his quarterfinal match to AJ Guardado of Duke in double-overtime (5-1). Long began his climb to placing by defeating Brett Farina of NC State 11-10, and knocked off Mears once again, this time by a major decision of 10-2. After advancing due to a John Burns (North Carolina) forfeit in the consolation semifinals, he beat UNC Pembroke's Brendan Parker-Risk by a narrow 3-2 score to earn the third-place finish.
Yost dropped his first match of the day at 141 lbs. to Tyquan Easton of UNC Pembroke, 4-3. He then rattled off an impressive six-bout win-streak, that began with a pin over NC State's Matt Buckworth at the 2:48 mark of the match, and ended with a 3-0 shutout of North Carolina's Nick Heilmann in the consolation semi-finals. However, he was downed by Duke's Riley Adamson in the third-place bout by an 8-6 decision to earn fourth-place.
A quartet of Keydet juniors went 2-2 in the tournament, as Luke Todd (133 lbs.), Joe Munno (165 lbs.) Bryce Garrison (174 lbs.), and Matt Brock (174 lbs.) all accomplished the feat, respectively.
As a team, the Keydets compiled a 25-17 mark.
VMI next hits the mat on Sun., Nov. 21, as the squad makes its annual trip to the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia.
