VMI Wrestling 2024-25 season review

LEXINGTON, Va. – With the season at its end, it is time to look back at VMI Wrestling's success during the 2024-25 campaign.
 
"We are very proud of these two and the grit they showed throughout the Southern Conference tournament," says VMI Wrestling Head Coach, Jim Gibson. "Their hard work, discipline, and determination were displayed and their placements are a testament to the hours of work they've put in. Josh [Evans] finished his career at VMI on a high note, and we are excited for Braxton [Lewis] to return even stronger."
 
Regular Season
- VMI went 7-11 on the season and had a 2-6 record against SoCon teams.
- As a team, the Keydets tallied 188 bout victories with 37 major decisions, 26 technical falls, and 43 falls for a total of 345dual points.
- VMI earned conference wins over Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian.
- Junior Braxton Lewis (184 pounds) led the team with 25 wins, earning a team-best 13 wins in duals and 12 in tournaments.
- Lewis also posted a team-best nine technical falls and 55 dual points.
- Sophomore Patrick Jordon (149 pounds) had a sensational sophomore season, earning 22 victories while boasting a 10-3 dual record with 52 dual points.
- Jordon had a team-high 13 pins and was ranked in the top 10 in the country in falls in February.
- Senior Josh Evans (285 pounds) ended his final collegiate season with 17 victories and 40 dual points.
- Sophomore Toby Schoffstall (197 pounds) battled back from injury and tallied 21 wins and 53 dual points.
- Schoffstall and junior Ryan Vigil (165 pounds) each recorded six major decisions to lead the team.
- Jordon was named SoCon Wrestler of the Week on November 6 right before Lewis was awarded the same weekly award on November 13.
- Lewis was ranked in two media polls (Intermat and WrestleStat) during the season.
- Five wrestlers – Dyson Dunham, Jordon, Lewis, Schoffstall, and Vigil – each had a win over a nationally-ranked opponent.
- In tournament play, Jordon won the Southeast Open in the 149 FR/SO bracket and the Purple Raider Open at 149.
- Dunham (133) and Lewis (184) also won the Purple Raider Open in their respective brackets.
 
2025 SoCon Championship
- VMI finished seventh in the conference tournament, collecting 10.5 points.
- Evans and Lewis placed fourth in their respective brackets, earning a pair of wins each.
- Schoffstall picked up a victory on the consolation side of the bracket.
