LYNCHBURG, Va. ? Wrestling their final non-conference dual of the season, VMI fell 38-9 on the road to Liberty on Thursday evening at the Vines Center.
The Flames (11-9-1) won seven consecutive matches in the middle of the dual, including three pins and two major decisions. The Keydets (0-10) picked up a win by sophomore Curtis Moore, who returned to the lineup only last week due to an injury, and a win via forfeit.
The match basically began at 141 tied at six as the teams alternated forfeits in the first two weight classes. At 141, LU senior Tim Harner netted the Flames' first fall of the season, pinning VMI freshman David Yost in 4:06. Teammate Frankie Gayeski followed suit at 149, pinning Richard Crozier at the 4:04 mark to put the Flames up 18-6.
The run continued for the host team, as Shaun Smith ran up an 11-1 major decision on Keydet redshirt junior Michael Long at 157. The Flames scored their third pin of the match at 165, where Brad Clark recorded the fall against Jon Horne at 6:11.
LU junior Aaron Kelley pulled out a tight match at 174 against Keydet freshman Andrew Szymborski. Kelley scored a pair of takedowns in the first period, while Szymborski twice escaped to make it a 4-2 match. Kelley then advanced his lead to 6-2 with an early reversal in the second period, before Szymborski once again escaped to bring the score to 6-3. In the third, Szymborski cut the lead to 6-4 with another escape, but could do no more damage as Kelley won a 7-4 decision with the riding time point.
Following a 15-2 major decision by LU senior Chris Daggett at 184, Moore won VMI's only contested match of the evening. Against sophomore Brandon Johnson at 197, Moore scored an escape early in the second period to grab a 1-0 advantage, then rode Johnson out in the third period to clinch a 2-0 win with the riding time point. In VMI's last dual, Moore scored a 1-0 win by escaping in the second before riding out his opponent in the third.
In the final match of the night, LU junior heavyweight Patrick Walker blanked VMI sophomore Josh Wine, 6-0.
VMI returns to action on Monday, taking on Southern Conference foe Chattanooga on the road at 6 p.m.
