EMMITTSBURG, Md.- The VMI swimming and diving teams competed at Mount St. Mary's on Saturday, with the men's team splitting a pair of decisions, while the women's team fell in three matchups.
On the men's side, the Keydets knocked off conference rival Howard (52-43), but lost to non-conference foe St. Peter's (53-42). The women, meanwhile, fell to Howard (86-26), Mount St. Mary's (118-20) and St. Peter's (144-23).
Freshman James Goodwillie took top honors in the 200 backstroke, turning in a time of 2:17.10, while also placing second in the 400 individual medley (4:56.41). Additionally, junior Will Rowcliffe's times of 24.86 in the 50 freestyle and 54.94 in the 100 freestyle gave him a pair of first-place finishes against Howard.
The Keydets' top relay finish came in the 400 freestyle, as Rowcliffe, Justin Ferrell, Matt Elliott and Tristan Euritt touched the wall in 3:46.34. That foursome was followed by the teaming of Charlie Barnett, Andrew Jeter, Rory Alfree and Trevor Stanco (4:04.61), as the 1-2 finish in the day's final event assured VMI of the win over Howard.
On the women's side, sophomore Chelsea Nugent placed fourth in the 50 freestyle (30.62), while freshman Veronica Lentsch placed seventh in the race (32.48). In the 100 freestyle, senior Stephanie Ortiz (1:17.55) and sophomore Lizanne Carlos (1:19.59) contributed eighth and ninth-place finishes. The foursome combined to place second in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 5:05.22 in the day's final race.
The swimming and diving teams return to action on Wednesday afternoon, traveling to North Carolina to take on Davidson at 4 p.m.
