VMI Lacrosse Falls to Robert Morris

LEXINGTON, Va.- On a sunny, breezy Tuesday afternoon in Lexington, the VMI Keydet Lacrosse team was defeated by the visiting Robert Morris Colonials, 15-4.

Robert Morris got off to a fast start, scoring at 12:37 of the opening frame as Andrew Watt, the Colonials' leading scorer, notched the game's opening goal. VMI appeared to answer with a Matt Harrison goal near the 11-minute mark, but it was not to be, as the goal was waved off due to an illegal equipment penalty. During Harrison's resultant three-minute trip to the penalty box, Robert Morris scored two man-up goals to take a 3-0 lead.

VMI responded at the 8:20 mark, when Dan Perestock scored off a Tim Moran dish, but that was as close as the Keydets would get all day. Watt scored his second goal of the contest at 7:20, and the Colonials led 4-1 after one period. Four second period goals gave Robert Morris an 8-1 halftime advantage.

The Colonials' extended their lead to 9-1 at the 11:48 mark of the third period, but VMI was able to score two goals in response. Brett Leonard scored off an assist from Lowell Patterson, and at 8:44, Harrison tallied off Moran's second assist of the day. Robert Morris made it 10-3 late in the frame, thanks to Watt's third goal of the contest.

The fourth period was controlled by the Colonials' Corbyn TaoBrambleby, as he scored three goals in less than four minutes midway through the frame. VMI did score their final marker at the 12:16 mark, when senior attackman Kevin Hill attempted a shot. Hill's attempt deflected off sophomore Jacob Weimer and past the Robert Morris goalkeeper, making it 11-4 at the time. TaoBrambleby's efforts followed however, and the Keydets could get no closer. The Colonials scored their final goal of the game with 2:21 remaining, accounting for the final margin.

With the loss, VMI falls to 1-5, while Robert Morris vaults to 4-3. The Keydets were led by Tim Moran, who had two assists, and the Colonials were sparked by TaoBrambleby, who scored four goals, as well as by Watt who tallied three goals and assisted on another.

VMI Lacrosse will return to action on Saturday, as the Keydets play host to conference foe Marist at Foster Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
