second-consecutive overtime match, VMI men's soccer was defeated 2-1 Saturday
afternoon by the UNC Asheville Bulldogs in a Big South Conference matchup in Asheville, N.C..
In a rare occurrence, all three of the game's goals were scored off corner
kicks.
In the 99th minute, and
final minute of the first overtime period, Asheville (3-4-2, 1-0 BSC) was awarded its 10th
corner kick of the match. The Bulldogs were able to kick directly to Patrick
Tate, who beat VMI (0-8, 0-2 BSC) keeper Adrian Dominguez to give the home team
the victory.
In the first half of play, action
was controlled in the middle of the field. Neither keeper was forced to make a
save, while just seven total shots were attempted.
In the 77th minute, VMI
was able to jump ahead. Freshman Ayao Sossou nailed a corner kick that was
misplayed by the Asheville
keeper. Keydet co-captain Barrett Luxhoj alertly tapped in the loose ball,
putting VMI up 1-0. The goal was Luxhoj's second of the season, equaling his
2007 total.
The home team was unable to mount
a threat until the 89th minute, when the Bulldogs converted off a
corner kick. With just over a minute to play, the game was tied at one, and it
remained that way until the game-winner in overtime.
The majority of action in overtime
took place in the middle third of the field, with Asheville attempting two shots prior to the
game-ending sequence that led to Tate's winning goal with just 24 seconds remaining.
