Swimming & Diving Competes at Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- The VMI swimming and diving teams returned to action on Saturday morning, competing against Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) foes Gardner-Webb and North Carolina A&T.  On the men's side, the Keydets fell to the host Bulldogs 142-92, while the women's team dropped decisions to both Gardner-Webb (78-14) and North Carolina A&T.

Freshman James Goodwillie (Richmond, Va.) broke both the VMI varsity and freshman records in the 200 backstroke, as his time of 1:58.36 broke Jon Walters' 16-year-old varsity record by four-hundredths of a second.  Goodwillie, who won the 200 backstroke by almost four seconds, also took top honors in the 200 individual medley, touching the wall at 2:00.43.

Junior Will Rowcliffe (Falls Church, Va.) turned in the Keydets' other individual first-place finish, winning the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.03.  Rowcliffe also led off VMI's 200 freestyle relay, teaming with Alex Brush, Justin Ferrell and Tristan Euritt to edge out GWU by less then three-tenths of a second in the meet's final event.

Other top finishes for the Keydets included Rowcliffe's second-place showing in the 100 freestyle (51.48) and freshman Matt Elliott's (Norfolk, Va.) second-place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:00.51).  Additionally, senior Dan Bogert (Tempe, Ariz.) placed second in both the 100 (1:06.65) and 200 breaststroke (2:29.88).

On the women's side, sophomore Chelsea Nugent (Glendale, Calif.) placed second in the 50 (27.42) and 100 (1:01.20) freestyle events while swimming leadoff for the team's 200 freestyle relay.  The team of Nugent, Stephanie Ortiz, Lizanne Carlos and Veronica Lentsch came in with a 2:01.92, placing third in the event.

The women's swimming and diving team returns to action on Saturday, playing host to Radford at 1 p.m. at the Clark King Pool.  The men's team will next compete the following weekend, taking part in the Thomas Murphy Invitational, hosted by Loyola in Baltimore.
