Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. ? Thanks to a late goal by Stephen Anderson, the VMI men's soccer team
topped the Radford Highlanders 1-0 Wednesday afternoon in a Big South
matchup at Patchin Field, earning its second straight win in the process.
After a scoreless first 80
minutes, Keydet midfielder Daniel Welsh nailed a cross from the right flank.
The ball went into the box, and Anderson, who had not played since Oct. 12's tilt with Winthrop due to injury,
nailed a perfect header from in close to give the Keydets the eventual winning
margin. The goal came with just under 10 minutes to play, and was the second
career marker for the VMI senior co-captain.
The game began underneath
unseasonably warm, sunny skies, with a temperature hovering around 55 degrees.
The first half of play was controlled by both back lines, as neither team
mounted quality scoring chances. Radford had a slight edge, thanks to four
corner kicks, but neither squad was able to truly pressure the other during a
scoreless first 45 minutes.
VMI began to take control of the
game's pace after a Welsh corner kick at 52:07. Brandon Gary attempted a header
off that corner kick, but the shot went just wide. The Keydets controlled the
majority of the next 20 minutes, but were unable to seriously test Radford
netminder Ryan Taylor until the 74:30 mark, when Andrew Self got loose near the
box, and the California
native fired a shot that appeared to be headed for the top right corner of the
net. Taylor dove
to his left and made a fully outstretched, spectacular save, tipping the ball
away at the last moment to keep the game scoreless.
Just three minutes later,
Radford's Iyiola Awosika made a run deep into the VMI zone and fired a shot
toward Keydet keeper Brian Sowell, but Sowell responded with a diving save of
his own to preserve the scoreless tie.
Just after the 80 minute mark,
Welsh made a run down the right side and found Anderson, who had just reentered
the game, with a cross. The VMI co-captain headed the ball home, and the
Keydets took the 1-0 advantage. Radford attempted to mount a rally, but could
not do so in the final 9:30 of play.
The game was a very evenly played
contest throughout. VMI outshot Radford 16-15, while the Highlanders held the
edge in corner kicks, 6-4. VMI keeper Sowell made five saves to post his second straight shutout, as VMI has now not surrendered a goal in its past 190:52 of play. Taylor
made four saves for Radford in defeat.
With the win, VMI moves to 2-10
overall and 1-3 in the Big South. Radford drops to 7-7-1 and 3-4 in conference
play.
The Keydets return to action
Sunday, as they travel to Boiling
Springs, N.C., to
face the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
