Swimming & Diving Drops Conference Duals Against College of Charleston and Radford

RADFORD, Va.- The VMI swimming and diving teams returned to action for the first time since winter furlough and dropped decisions against a Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) foes College of Charleston and Radford on Friday afternoon at the Dedmon Center Natatorium. On the men's side, the Keydets fell 140-71 to the Cougars, while the women's team, once again consisting only of freshman Chelsea Nugent (Glendale, Calif.), was outscored 159-4 by Charleston and 142-4 against the Highlanders.

In the men's competition, sophomore diver Jeff Turner (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events, posting scores of 182.63 and 164.33, respectively. Turner's one-meter score marks his top performance of the season and the top score in the CCSA this year.

Junior Trevor Stanco (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) won the 100 breaststroke (1:13.08) while placing sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:24.52). Meanwhile, senior Chris Beyer (Reston, Va./Flint Hill) placed third in the 500 freestyle (5:18.07) and fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:57.80). Senior Peter Borchelt (Evans, Ga./Evans) took third place in the 100 backstroke (1:01.80) and fifth in the 200 IM (2:19.93), while sophomore Charlie Barnett (Roanoke, Va./Lord Botetourt) finished fourth in the 100 freestyle (56.03) and fifth in the 200 freestyle (2:09.55). In other action, sophomore Tristan Euritt (Waterloo, Iowa/West) took fifth in both the 50 freestyle (24.47) and 100 butterfly (1:01.50).

In relay action, Beyer, Barnett, Stanco and sophomore Andrew Baity (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) took top honors in the 400 freestyle event (3:52.29)

Nugent competed in a pair of events, placing seventh in both the 50 freestyle (27.64) and 100 butterfly (1:09.97). Nugent's time in the 50 freestyle stands as a new school record in the event, becoming the eighth varsity record the freshman has established this season.

The mens' swimming and diving team returns to action on Saturday afternoon, taking on Delaware in Harrisonburg at JMU. The women's team will have their final regular season competition on Saturday, Feb. 2, taking on Davidson and Virginia Tech at Radford.
