LEXINGTON, Va. - Senior attackman Leo McInerney (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) of the Virginia Military Institute lacrosse team has been selected to play in the annual United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's North/South Senior Game. The game will take place at the State University of New York College at Cortland in Cortland, N.Y. on Saturday, June 11 at 3:00 p.m.
McInerney, who will play on the south team, is the first Keydet to be chosen for the senior-only all-star game since 1999 when Mason Ayers played for VMI in the game.
The two teams were selected from a ballot from which coaches of various teams voted on. Several of the coaches who voted were from teams that the Keydets played against in 2005, making the recognition all that more meaningful for McInerney.
"It is an honor that he earned from his peers," VMI coach
Doug Bartlett said. "He's a real competitor. He earned it," Bartlett added. "It is a neat honor for the team as well as for him."
The Keydets' only player to be named to the All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's First-Team in 2005, McInerney led VMI to a .500 season with a 7-7 overall record and a 4-4 mark in the MAAC for a sixth place finish. He led the Keydets with career highs of 34 goals and 46 points including 12 assists. McInerney ended his college career on April 30 by scoring five goals including the game-winner in a 16-15 win in double overtime over eventual MAAC Tournament Champion Marist.
