LEXINGTON, Va.- Josh Hanna's goal with one minute remaining lifted VMI to a 3-2 victory over Bluefield Thursday afternoon in men's soccer action at Patchin Field.
Despite outshooting their opponents by a 38-6 margin, VMI (4-4-1) could not take the lead until the 89th minute, when Hanna knocked home a cross from Parker Thurman for his second goal of the season.
"Bluefield played with a lot of heart and a lot of intensity," said VMI head coach
Stephen Ross. "We were told that they were very opportunistic, and we really felt like we should have put them away in the first 20-30 minutes when we were fresh, we just did not do that. We were pressuring them, we were successful with building, we just didn't put the ball in the back of the net. Then we gave up a couple of easy goals. But we ended up pulling out the win and doing what we needed to do."
Bluefield's Onel Nacius gave the Rams (6-1) an early lead when he deflected a clearing attempt into the back of the net just eight minutes into the game. VMI's Michael Lloyd then answered with his third goal of the season in the 25th minute, when he connected with a header on a cross from Hanna.
Nacius gave the Rams the lead again just six minutes later, when he blasted a shot past VMI keeper John Sollock from inside of the six-yard box after a pass from Chris McCall. Just before halftime, Lloyd struck again, burying a shot just inside of the post to tie the game at the half.
In the second half, the Keydets kept the pressure up, launching 22 shots to the Rams three. However, Bluefield keeper David Turpin kept the Rams in the game, totaling 14 saves in the contest. Sollock made just one save in earning his first win of the season.
VMI collected 13 corner kicks to the Rams' five and three offsides calls to the Rams' zero. Bluefield was called for 16 fouls, while VMI was whistled for just 11.
VMI will play their third contest in four days on Saturday afternoon, when they travel to High Point, N.C. to take on Big South foe High Point University. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Albion Millis Stadium.
