LEXINGTON, Va. - Sophomore Arizona Reid poured in 26 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season as High Point out-pointed VMI, 100-90 Thursday night at Cameron Hall.
VMI's Reggie Williams and Matt Murrer both turned in career-high scoring nights, but the Keydets couldn't overcome a 28-point early second half deficit or a season-high 30 turnovers in the loss.
High Point raised its Big South Conference record to 3-1, 10-4 overall while VMI fell to 6-8, 1-2 in the league.
The Panthers shot 51.7% for the game and drained 11-of-27 three-point shots, including eight in the first half.
Leading 55-40 at halftime, High Point appeared poised for a blow-out after reeling off 14 unanswered points in just over a two-plus minute stretch early in the second half. Troy Bowen's 3-pointer at the 15:53 mark gave the Panthers their biggest lead of the game, 74-46.
But VMI chipped away at the deficit to pull within six points in the final minute of regulation. A 7-0 run capped by a Williams 3-point play at the 2:09 mark pulled the Keydets within eight points, 92-84, and a driving layup by Chavis Holmes cut the lead to 94-88 with :50 left.
But the Panthers responded as senior guard Akeem Scott hit four of six free throws in the final :45 to quell the VMI rally.
Scott finished with 15 points and was 13-of-16 from the line. Freshman guard Melvin Crowder also added 15 points for HPU.
Williams' 34 points surpassed his previous career-high of 29 points against Southern Virginia on Dec. 10. Murrer posted his second career double double with 23 points and 11 rebounds.
For the third straight game, VMI assistant coach
Daniel Willis handled the sidelines for head coach Duggar Baucom, who continues to recuperate from surgery performed last week.
Senior center Tadas Mankevicius missed his second straight game with a foot injury.
VMI entertains Liberty Saturday night at Cameron Hall at 8:00 p.m. High Point next plays at Radford next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
VMI assistant coach
Daniel Willis - "The key to the game was handling pressure and with young guys out there it's hard, but 30 turnovers is inexcusable. We worked three straight days on being strong with the ball, told them to cut hard, they're going to grab you, hold you
