Johnson named Third Team All-Southern Conference

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After an outstanding junior season on the hardwood, VMI junior TJ Johnson has been named a Third Team All-SoCon recipient, the league announced Wednesday ahead of this weekend's Ingles Southern Conference Championship.

The Belton, Texas, native played a big role for the Keydets this season by averaging 35.4 minutes per game, second-most in the league.

Deadly from beyond the arc, Johnson ranks second in the SoCon and seventh among all D-I shooters with nearly four three-pointers made per game. Johnson has launched 301 shots beyond the arc, ranking first nationally, and has made 107 three-point field goals, the fifth-most in the country.

"I'm very proud of TJ for his dedication to our program and leadership throughout the season," said VMI Head Basketball Coach Andrew Wilson. "He is very deserving of this recognition from the league and has been a consistent force all season long. TJ is a great ambassador for VMI and is one of the finest young men I've ever had the opportunity to coach."

Johnson is one of the league's biggest scoring threats, averaging 18.4 points per game, which ranks fourth in the SoCon. He gets it done on both ends of the court, averaging 5.4 defensive rebounds per game, fifth-most in the league. He is also a force on the defensive end, averaging 1.5 steals per game, the third most in the conference.

This season, he has logged 14 games with 20-plus points and three games with 30-plus.

Johnson was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week on November 10 for averaging 31.5 points per game between the road contests at Southern Indiana and Missouri.

He has totaled 958 career points (551 this season, 407 last season) and is just 42 points away from becoming VMI's 46th player in program history to attain 1,000 career points as a Keydet.

An excellent cadet-athlete, Johnson was chosen to serve on the NCAA Division I Board of Directors as one of only three NCAA student-athletes nationwide to serve on the committee.

The No. 10 seed Keydets face No. 7 UNCG Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in the opening round of the SoCon Tournament at Harrah's Cherokee Center in Asheville, North Carolina.
