Women’s Soccer falls to Elon

LEXINGTON, Va. – Looking to pick up a second straight result, the VMI women's soccer team fell to visiting Elon University by a 5-0 score Thursday afternoon at Patchin Field.
 
The Keydets (0-5-1) exchanged shots with the Phoenix (4-1-1) early on and nearly put one in when sophomore Isabella Franco snuck behind the defense and nearly scored on a shot saved by Elon keeper Anica Carpenter.
 
The Phoenix responded soon after, however, when Isa Murdock scored in the 20th minute (19:23) off an assist from Gabby Tirado and logged another goal eight minutes later (27:34) off a helper from Grace Gelhaus for a brace. Elon went into the break with a 2-0 advantage.
 
Elon came alive again in the final 10 minutes of the match when Nicole Kleyner took a pass from Jordan Green and put it into the net for a 3-0 advantage.
 
Murdock would go on to earn a hat trick in the 86th minute (85:08) off a cross from Talia Feigin, and teammate Maya Abousaab registered her first goal of the year off a pass from Feigin, who finished with two assists on the day.

*The Phoenix finished with 22 shots on the day, including 13 in the first half. Murdock led the way with three goals on six shot attempts. Tirado and Kleyner also led the offense with three shots apiece for the afternoon
*Junior Madeline Karsonovich led VMI with three shot attempts while Bailey Reid contributed two
*In 80 minutes of action, VMI goalie Maren Ryberg earned eight saves in a loss while Elon's Anica Carpenter achieved four in a win
