VMI falls to Bulldogs in high-scoring affair

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Despite scoring the first goal and going into halftime knotted up at 1-1, the VMI women's soccer team fell by a 5-3 tally in a high-scoring contest Thursday afternoon at Washington Light Infantry Field in Charleston, South Carolina.
 
VMI (0-9-1, 0-1) got on the board first in the 11th minute (10:47) when Isabella Franco scored off a rebounded kick following a corner kick that she put into the lower left corner of The Citadel net for the early advantage.
 
The Bulldogs (6-2-1, 1-0) matched the score at 1-1 later in the half after converting a penalty kick which The Citadel's Jasiah Pack slotted into the lower left corner of the net.
 
About 10 minutes into the second half of play (56:05), The Citadel's Adrianna Gill put the Bulldogs ahead 2-1 after taking a cross from Emily Steiner and sneaking it past VMI keeper Leslie Surita-Perez.
 
The lead was short-lived for the Bulldogs, however, as VMI freshman Jaleesa Eichel scored her second goal of the season after taking a pass from teammate Ella Peterson and knocking it in to tie the match at 2-2 in the 64th minute (63:49).
 
Two minutes later, the Bulldogs regained the lead 3-2 following an unassisted goal by Charlotte Seay at the 65:43 mark. Moments later, The Citadel's Sophie Voyer scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 70th minute (69:33) to put the Bulldogs up by a 4-2 count with 20 minutes left in regulation.
 
VMI continued to show fight and trimmed the deficit to 4-3 in the 83rd minute (82:23) when freshman Jordan Davis converted a PK opportunity after teammate Ella Peterson was taken down in the Citadel goal box. The goal marked Davis' second of the season and her young VMI career.
 
The Bulldogs scored an insurance goal one minute later when Gabrielle Macer put it in anassisted for the game's final tally in the 84th minute (83:08).
