Women’s Soccer Falls at UNC Asheville Despite Early Goal

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The VMI women's soccer team jumped out to an early lead Sunday afternoon, but host UNC Asheville rallied to claim a 5-1 victory over the Keydets at Greenwood Field.
 
VMI wasted no time finding the scoreboard, as junior midfielder Nixon Carpenter scored her first career goal just 33 seconds into the match off an assist from Ella Peterson for a quick 1-0 advantage.
 
The Bulldogs answered less than four minutes later, however, to level the match before taking a 2-1 lead late in the opening half. Asheville added three goals after halftime to secure the non-conference victory.
 
Goalkeeper Leslie Surita-Perez made six saves in the second half, while Maren Ryberg added three stops in the opening 45 minutes.
 
The Keydets now turn their attention to Southern Conference play as they open league action Thursday at rival The Citadel. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Charleston, South Carolina.
