Women’s Soccer drops contest to Longwood

LEXINGTON, Va. – Looking to pick up a win in its 2026 home opener, the VMI women's soccer team fell by a hard-fought 1-0 score to visiting Longwood Thursday afternoon at Patchin Field.
 
With the loss, VMI falls to 0-4 on the season while the Lancers improve to 2-2 for the year.
 
The game was competitive on both sides of the pitch as the Lancers won the shots count by a slim 16-12 margin, including six in the second half to VMI's five.  VMI won the corner kicks battle by a 5-2 margin as they had three in the opening half to zero for the Lancers.
 
Following a scoreless first half, Longwood got on the board early in the second half when Bailey Altizer took a cross from Sarah Olson and got the ball past VMI keeper Maren Ryberg for the game-winning goal at the 50:13 mark.

*Ryberg finished the game with seven saves in the loss while Longwood's Brynn Clagett earned one save in her personal victory
*Isabella Franco led VMI with four shots on the day while Nixon Carpenter took two  
*Taylor Martin and Phoebe Ganion led the Lancer with three shots apiece
