Lacrosse season comes to a close at the NEC Tournament

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The VMI lacrosse team gave its best effort in the Keydets' first ever appearance at the Northeast Conference Tournament but could not keep pace with Robert Morris in the second half as the No. 1 Colonials earned asd 12-5 win over the No. 4 Keydets Thursday night in the tourney semifinal at Joe Walton Stadium in Moon Township, Pennsylvania.
 
The Keydets finish the season with a 7-7 record while the Colonials advance to their second straight NEC Tournament title game Saturday to face the winner of No. 2 LIU and No. 3 Cleveland State facing off later this evening.
 
Game Summary
The first period saw a back-and-forth contest as the teams exchanged goals early on. After an RMU goal, VMI's Dayton Bagwell evened the game at 1-1 at the 11:14 mark. NEC Player of the Year Dylan Anderson scored his only goal of the game moments later before VMI's Beau Durkin tied it up again at 2-2 midway through the quarter. The Colonials went on to score two more goals late in the period to go into the second quarter with a 4-2 advantage.
 
Robert Morris opened the second period with another goal before Durkin logged his second goal at the 6:46 mark. Durkin registered a hat trick moments later to pull the Keydets within one score, 5-4, with 2:27 before the half. The Colonials tallied one more goal before the break to go into halftime with a little momentum and 6-4 lead.
 
RMU clamped down on defense in the second half and did not allow a VMI goal until the 11:20 mark of the fourth period while adding four goals of the own to go up, 10-4, going into the final period.  VMI freshman Ethan Ostrowski put in VMI's final goal but the Keydets were shut down the final 11 minutes of the game as the Colonials went on to win by the final 12-5 tally.
