LEXINGTON, Va. – The Southern Conference announced Monday afternoon that senior first baseman
Grayson Fitzwater was named SoCon Player of the Week for the second-straight week.
This is Fitzwater's second weekly honor of his career, after earning the accolade last week for his monstrous performance. This marks the first time since Justin Starke in April 2021 that a Keydet has earned SoCon Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks.
The Preseason Player of the Year continued his stellar March with another impressive week, helping the Keydets go 3-1, including their first road win against Norfolk State and a series victory over Cornell. Fitzwater slashed .583/1.333/.700, going seven-for-12 at the dish with three doubles and two homers to pair with five runs and six RBIs. He walked seven times and went three-for-three on stolen bases.
Fitzwater is on a nine-game hitting streak that started on March 1. This season, the lefty powerhouse is batting .409 with a team-high eight homers and 25 walks. His OPS is an outstanding 1.458, split between .894 slugging and .564 on-base clips.
Fitzwater and the Keydets battle Radford in a three-game series this weekend. VMI travels down to face the Highlanders in Radford, Virginia, on Friday at 6 p.m., then comes home to host on Saturday at 2 p.m., before going back to Radford for the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Friday and Saturday contests will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
