Keydets drop hard-fought contest to Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Down 14-3 at the half, the VMI football team could not quite come back from the deficit as the Mocs earned a 24-10 victory over the Keydets Saturday afternoon at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

With the loss, VMI falls to 0-9, 0-5 for the season while the Mocs improve to 6-3, 5-1 in league play.

The Keydets got on the board first late in the opening period with a Jack Joyce 29-yard field goal for an early 3-0 advantage.

On the Mocs' ensuing possession, UTC drove down the field and Battle Alberson ran it in from 14 yards out to give Chattanooga a lead they would not relinquish at 7-3 with 11:46 to play before the half. The Mocs would go on to score another touchdown late in the half when Taylor Crumedy received a 66-yard pass from Alberson to put Chattanooga up 14-3 going into the break.

Undeterred, the Keydets struck first in the third quarter when VMI quarterback JoJo Crump connected with Zion Trump for a 40-yard touchdown reception to get the Keydets right back in the game down 14-10 midway through the third period. The touchdown marked a career-first TD for Trump.

Chattanooga extended its lead to 17-10 on a Jude Kelley 46-yard field goal late in the third quarter. VMI was unable to capitalize on its scoring opportunities the rest of the way and the Mocs tallied one more touchdown midway through the fourth quarter. Chattanooga took time off the clock on a 10-play, 80-yard drive culminated by a Journey Wyche three-yard rush up the middle for the game's final score.

VMI's Leo Boehling led the rushing attack with 40 yards on 14 carries while Hayden Morris led the receiving efforts with three grabs for 35 yards.

Kevin Lalin led the Mocs with 88 rushing yards and Alberson finished the day going 5-8 passing for 135 yards through the air.  Crumedy led the receiving corps with 124  yards in the air attack.

Senior linebacker Isaiah Grevious led VMI with 10 tackles on the day.

With three more games to play during the 2026 season, the Keydets stay on the road next Saturday to face nationally ranked Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tennessee.
