VMI topped by #18 ETSU at home

LEXINGTON, Va. – Facing a nationally ranked ETSU squad, the VMI football team fell by a 38-0 score to the #18 visiting Bucs Saturday afternoon on Family Weekend at Foster Stadium.

With the loss, the Keydets fall to 0-8 overall on the season and 0-4 in conference play while the Bucs improve to 6-2 overall and a perfect 4-0 in league action.

The teams battled back and forth to open the game until the Bucs struck first late in the first quarter on a 19-yard TD pass from Mason Mims to Khristian Means for a 7-0 ETSU lead.

Midway through the second quarter, ETSU kicker Ewan Johnson connected on a 37-yard field goal. On their next possession, the Bucs returned a punt to the VMI 35-yard line to set up a short field. ETSU capped a five-play drive to score on a Tyler Griffin 23-yard reception from Mims to put the Bucs up 17-0 going into the break.

ETSU would go on to score one touchdown in the third quarter and two in the final stanza en route to its 38-0 road victory over the Keydets.

The Keydets were forced to punt eight times as VMI punter Ben Shrewsbury averaged 49.1 yards per punt.

Mims finished the game completing 22 of 25 passes for 173 yards while the Bucs' rushing corps combined for 272 yards on the ground including 121 from TJ Peyton.  On the receiving end, ETSU's Tyler Griffin led the team with 56 yards and two touchdowns.

The Keydets hit the road once again next weekend when they travel to Chattanooga, Tennessee, for a SoCon battle with the Mocs next Saturday at 1 p.m.
