Hot start not enough in loss to Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Despite leading host Wofford College by a 14-3 score after one quarter of play, the VMI football team was unable to sustain the momentum as the Terriers pulled away for a 41-14 victory over the Keydets Saturday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

With the loss, VMI falls to 0-7, 0-3 on the season while the Terriers improve to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

VMI senior linebacker Isaiah Grevious got things going quickly on Wofford's first possession of the game by scooping up a fumble and returning it 54 yards for a touchdown to give the Keydets a 7-0 lead five minutes into the game. After a short completion, Wofford wide receiver Ivory Aikens coughed up the ball near midfield which was punched out by VMI freshman linebacker Erick Roman. Grevious reeled it in and scampered the rest of the way for the first score of the game and quick VMI advantage.

Following a Wofford field goal, the Keydets finished the opening period strong when Traveion Slaughter rushed the ball for a 61-yard touchdown to give VMI a 14-3 lead going into the second quarter.

From that point on, the Terriers were relentless and did not allow another VMI score the rest of the way while registering 38 points of their own en route to the home victory.

Gerald Modest scored three touchdowns for the Terriers, and Aikens made up for his previous fumble by scoring on a 45-yard strike from J.T. Fayard late in the second quarter.

Ahead 34-14 going into the final quarter, the Terriers would go on to score once more when Fayard found Anjuan Coleman for a 43-yard TD reception for the game's final tally.

The Keydets return home to face league foe ETSU next Saturday in Lexington. Kick-off is set for a 1:30 p.m. start at Foster Stadium.
