VMI falls at UNCG to open conference action

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Looking to start off Southern Conference play with a victory, the VMI women's soccer team fell by a 4-0 score to host UNCG Thursday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
 
The Spartans (2-7-1, 1-0) got on the board midway through the opening half with a goal by Taylor Mentzer slotted into the lower left corner for the game-winning goal in the 26th minute.
 
A few minutes later, UNCG's Ryen Ortiz added another Spartan tally in the 32nd minute (31:31) after taking a cross from teammates Azumi Oka and Nicole Hutchinson.
 
The Spartans put in another goal late in the first half by way of a foul in the VMI box that drew a penalty kick for Rina Ogimoto which she knocked into the lower right corner of the net for a 3-0 UNCG advantage going into halftime.
 
Mentzer would go on to add one more Spartan goal 10 minutes into the second half after taking a pass by Ogimoto and sending the ball home for the final tally of the game.

*The Spartans finished with 21 shot attempts, including eight on frame, and had seven corner kick opportunities
*Starting VMI keeper Maren Ryberg earned three saves in the first half. Reserve Leslie Surita-Perez played the second half and logged one save while conceding one goal
*Mentzer led the Spartans with seven shots during the contest
*Bailey Reid, Samantha Uschold and Natalie Centurione each accounted for one shot apiece for the Keydets. All three shots required a save from UNCG goalie Emma Malone
