Keydets battle to 5-3 loss at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. – Finishing strong through the final minute of both halves, the VMI women's soccer team battled its way to a high-scoring 5-3 loss at Longwood Wednesday night at Longwood Athletics Complex in Farmville, Virginia.

Game Summary
*Midway through the opening half, the Lancers (3-0) earned a quick 3-0 advantage following a trio of scores over an 11-minute span for a commanding lead.
*Undeterred, the Keydets (0-3) fought back with a pair of goals by freshman Taliyah Headman just one minute apart to quickly put VMI back in contention with under eight minutes to play
*Headman took advantage of a defensive mishap by Longwood as a defender slipped and lost balance, which Headman quickly realized and stole the ball, juking another defender before slotting the ball into the lower left corner of the net at the 36:21 mark
*One minute later (37:30), fellow freshman Bailey Reid got behind the Lancer defense and crossed the ball to a streaking Headman deep in the goal box as she tapped it in for her second career VMI goal
*The Lancers rebounded with a pair of goals early in the second half to regain their momentum with a 5-2 lead with a little over 35:00 to play. Sam Fischer scored her second goal of the game and now has five goals through three games on the young season
*VMI continued to show fight as Headman forwarded the ball upfield before junior Samantha Uschold shot the ball off a hop into the upper left corner of the net for her first career goal at VMI to cut the deficit to the final tally of 5-3. Paige Becker was also given an assist on the play.
