Keydets fall at Richmond to begin season

RICHMOND, Va. – The VMI women's soccer team competed hard but fell by a 5-0 score to host Richmond to open the 2025 season on the road Thursday night at President's Field in Richmond, Virginia.

The Keydets (0-1) fell behind early as Richmond (1-0) freshman Emma Newman made an immediate impact in her Spider debut by scoring in the third minute (2:05) of the match.
 
She would go on to score a hat trick in the opening half by registering goals in the eighth minute (7:31) and 14th minute (13:30) to give the host team a 3-0 advantage going into the break.
 
Key Stats
*Newman finished the game with four goals after scoring her final tally in the 70th minute (69:07)
*Newman also logged an assist on Richmond's fourth goal as she put in a cross to teammate Kingsley Hughes who shot the ball into the top left corner of the net
*VMI senior Riley Boucher led VMI with three shots on the night while junior Barrett Callejo contributed two. Mackenzie Hobik, Isabella Franco, Taliyah Headman, Madeline Karsonovich and Natalie Centurione also notched shot attempts during the contest
*Richmond earned 19 shots during the game to VMI's 10. The Keydets put up quality shot attempts as eight of VMI's 10 shots required a save by Richmond keeper Veronica Rrapi
*VMI keeper Maren Ryberg finished with seven saves in 67 minutes of action during the loss while Richmond's Rrapi tallied eight saves in a complete game. VMI goalie Leslie Surita-Perez played the final 23 minutes and registered one save while allowing one goal
